Civitas

civitas

A suite of prints made in response to the ruined Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Amongst the artifacts recovered are a mosaic of a skeleton encouraging one to enjoy life while one is still alive. (This is why he is bearing several amphorae full of wine).

.

Other prints in this series include drawings that echo Bocklin’s Isle of the Dead, a painting which has long fascinated me.
